Reeves' Army

Covering the Beautiful Game in the City Beautiful

My vision of the future of Orlando City supporter culture

I remember back when the supporters for Orlando City were really ramping up. Before the Aztex moved to Orlando, we had a ragtag bunch of misfits–the Orlando Soccer Supporters Club–led by the team’s current Director of Communications, Adam Soucie, and myself. Last November, we met with Dan and Lori Conlee, who were forming their own supporters’ group, initially named Orlando City Supporters.

As Adam moved into the team office, leaving his day job and his side jobs with the Tuskers and Predators behind, I made the decision at the time that I simply did not have the werewithal to lead the supporters into the actual team era. So I handed Dan and Lori the keys.

As I get busy with my day job–in which I’m dealing with a shift in the way we do things–and start ramping up my other side pursuits of PA announcing (I am doing varsity football for the first time this year) and writing recaps for Golden Road, the prime fan site of The Price is Right, I am pondering how I want to approach Reeves’ Army in the future.

When I came up with the name, it was a proposal for a name for what ultimately became The Ruckus. As they took the naming elsewhere, I used it for this blog. But with the tensions rising between The Ruckus and the Iron Lion Firm, I can’t help but feel disheartened. We cannot have several supporters groups all doing different things.

In 2012, we have the chance to build on an insanely great 2011. And I’m going to do everything in my power to ensure that we do. To ensure success in 2012, we, the supporters, have some work to do.

FIRST AND FOREMOST, WE MUST LEARN TO WORK TOGETHER.

We don’t have to have a monolithic supporters’ group in order to show unified support. The two best organic supporters’ groups in MLS–Timbers Army and Section 8 Chicago–are both subdivided in some fashion. Timbers Army appears as a single group before the Independent Supporters’ Council, but is subdivided into several subgroups which go either by stadium section or geographic area. Section 8 is a governing body of sorts which coordinates many independent supporters’ groups.

The gameday environment will be at its best if we all stand as one in the South End. Not only does this mean The Ruckus and Iron Lion Firm coming to some sort of peace, but also Los Guerrilloz and Rhythm Section joining us in the South End. My hope is that they will claim sections of the South End for their own and intermix their cultures with ours for the betterment of our team. It would be excellent for us to use each other’s chants as a gigantic group. It’ll just sound much better (and louder) than the four of us each doing our own thing.

SECONDLY, WE MUST REACH OUT TO NON-ALIGNED SEASON TICKET HOLDERS AND CASUAL FANS.

If my calculations are correct bywhat I’ve gleaned from team news reports and Twitter notes, if we’re not over 1,000 season ticket holders, we’re close. Thing is, the 100s South End holds over 4,000 seats. The three center sections (119, 120 and 121) hold 508, 580 and 580 fans, respectively. We need to fill them so we can amp up the intensity of our support.

I know not every season ticket holder in the supporters’ section is actually in the supporters’ groups. And by now, all supporters’ group members should have reupped on their season tickets. We need to get in contact to those who have season tickets, and those who are interested in attending games, to get them involved in our level of support.

In addition, we need to foster the creation of other supporters’ groups. I know Orlando has the capacity for more groups. We can find groups to take charge of the other South End sections and lead the cheering in our area. I will admit, I have considered doing this myself, but I have made no concrete plans yet, owing to my currently busy schedule.

THIRD, WE MUST TAKE OUR OUTREACH ON THE ROAD.

The Ruckus made good road trips to Richmond and Charleston, and the Iron Lions sent fans to our U.S. Open Cup match in Dallas. And Orlando City’s presence has been felt not only throughout USL Pro, but all over the soccer world.

With a little more planning and lead time, I think we can do even better.

I think we can organize, in addition to at least one major road trip, planting small away trips to each of the Lions’ away games. I would love to see representation of our fans at every single USL Pro game we play.

And it doesn’t end there.

I have an idea: the Orlando City Mean 18. Let’s put at least one fan in every single Major League Soccer venue for one game each. Let’s make our support seen everywhere.

Then, at the end of the 2012 season, let’s get a contingent together and send a major representation to the 2012 MLS Cup. My idea: a show of force that The Don absolutely cannot ignore.

This is what the Sons of Ben did at the 2007 MLS Cup. Philadelphia was awarded Team #16 only a couple months later, coming out of virtually nowhere. Of course, they only had to go a couple hours down I-95 that year. So this will be a much more difficult undertaking for us no matter where it is. If we’re going to do this, we need to begin making plans now.

If we fill even half a section of whatever venue is selected for the 2012 MLS Cup, we will make a major impression.

This is primarily food for thought for the coming year. We did extremely well in 2011, considering we got started in November. Next season began on September 4. How are you preparing for 2012?

Orlando City Players to MLS: Alvarez to Salt Lake, Griffin to San Jose, Olum to KC

Major League Soccer has taken notice of Orlando City’s talent. Today was their roster deadline, and MLS teams have taken two players on loan, and signed our remaining free agent.

First, news that forward Max Griffin was loaned to San Jose Earthquakes. Griffin, a UCLA graduate (scored 28 goals in his college career), he’s scored 19 regular-season goals for Austin and Orlando City in these past two years.

Next, a report that midfielder Yordany Alvarez was loaned to Real Salt Lake. The Cuban ex-pat is the reigning USL Pro MVP. Our #10 has 6 goals in his USL career, and played a key role in the Lions’ championship season.

In his first game with Real Salt Lake, he will play a now-former Lion. Defender Lawrence Olum, one of our last remaining free agents, has been transferred to Sporting Kansas City.

I hereby declare the Saturday match between Salt Lake and Kansas City the Orlando City Cup.

Some good news for Orlando City: virtually the entire roster will return next year.

According to Zach McCann of the Orlando Sentinel, only Lawrence Olum and Jamie Watson are not under contract past 2011. Watson is currently in negotiations, while there are reports of MLS interest in Olum.

Of course, last week, the team announced that they signed Miguel Gallardo, Wes Allen and Jerome Mechack for next year and beyond.

Orlando City wins epic USL Pro Championship

If there’s one thing I learned from the Women’s World Cup, it’s that sometimes the most satisfying victories come from the most infuriating leadups.

That was the case last night. But after finishing regulation at 1-1 and extra time at 2-2, Orlando City beat Harrisburg City Islanders 3-2 in penalty kicks to win the 2011 USL Pro Championship and claim the double: both the regular-season and playoff titles.

City was pressing hard during the first half, but saw nothing for their effort. The second half started with an incredibly dumb mistake that almost cost the Lions the match, as Miguel Gallardo was pulled off his line, and tripped Sainey Tourray just outside the penalty box, earning him a red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. Although the imminent opportunity for Harrisburg was wasted as Sean Kelley came into the match, playing a man down, City would be chasing for most of the rest of the match.

City almost got a miracle at the end, when Lawrence Olum took in a cross from Lewis Neal at 89′ to put them on the board. But with a good amount of stoppage time, Harrisburg was able to draw level right at the death. Pulling the goalkeeper forward, J.T. Noone got a corner kick at 90+5′ to push the match to extra time.

Early on in extra time, Harrisburg silenced the crowd of 11,220 with a goal from Sainey Touray off another corner kick at 95′. As extra time dragged on, it seemed lost, until Harrisburg gift-wrapped our redemption. Geoff Bloes took out an attacking Dennis Chin from behind in the penalty box, earning him a red card as well for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. Lewis Neal nailed the penalty kick at 115′ to push the match to a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, with Harrisburg shooting first, Nelson Becerra and Jose Angulo had their shots grabbed by Sean Kelley, while Lewis Neal and Jordany Alvarez made the first two, giving Orlando City an early 2-0 edge. Then it was drawn even 2-2 with J.T. Noone and Stephen Basso scoring for Harrisburg, while Charlie Campbell and Luke Boden both skied their attempts.

A miss by Sainey Touray gave Orlando City the opportunity to win. Devorn Jorsling made Harrisburg goalkeeper Chase Harrison miss, burying it in the left corner to win the title for the Lions.

City will be celebrating tonight at Urban Flats in downtown Orlando from 7-9pm, to take advantage of Labor Day. The party will be in their “Wine-down Wednesday” format: $20 gets a wristband for unlimited access to Urban Flats’ beer and wine selection, as well as a selection of appetizers. You can go without buying the wristband as well, so don’t think you have to spend $20 to celebrate with the team.

GAMEDAY: Orlando City v. Harrisburg in USL Pro Championship Game; Lions sweep USL awards; UCF men beat UMass

This is it. The moment that our head coach, Adrian Heath, promised when the team was introduced late last year.

No matter what, the season ends tonight. We’ll find out if our team takes the ultimate prize for USL Pro.

The team will salute the fans tonight. Programs, wristbands and car decals are free while supplies last.

On Sunday night, taking advantage of the Labor Day weekend, we celebrate the season, win or lose, at Urban Flats downtown.

There is one unfortunate bit of news to report. Due to our long playoff run, we’ve bumped into a bit of a scheduling snafu. Sunday brings the traditional MEAC/SWAC Challenge game at the Citrus Bowl. We have been left with no choice but to play with gridiron lines on the pitch.

********

As one last note, Orlando City swept all four USL end-of-season awards they were up for, with Yordany Alvarez taking USL Pro MVP honors. Rob Valentino took Defender of the Year, Miguel Gallardo took Goalkeeper of the Year, and Adrian Heath took Manager of the Year.

********

Several members of The Ruckus were present as the UCF men’s soccer team, which are currently #16 in the country, opened their regular season home schedule with a 2-0 win over UMass. McKauly Tulloch had both goals at 22′ and 29′.

They will host Belmont at 7pm on Sunday night.

Orlando City signs Gallardo, Allen, Mechack to multi-year contracts; USL Pro Award finalists

Orlando City made a splash today by announcing multi-year contracts for goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo, midfielder Wes Allen, and defender Jerome Mechack. (Yes, he prefers his name that way, we finally confirmed it.)

Says Gallardo… “I’m very excited and appreciative. I’m looking forward to an even better season and helping Orlando City get to MLS!”

Nice.

********

I have to say, I was surprised when I saw Yordany Alvarez listed as finalist for USL Pro MVP.

In addition, Rob Valentino is up for Defender of the Year, Miguel Gallardo for Goalkeeper of the Year, and Adrian Heath for Coach of the Year.

The Richmond Kickers’ season ended last night in a 2-1 loss to Chicago Fire in the semifinal of the U.S. Open Cup.
